Garage sales of Saturdays’ passed July 11, 2009

100_2473Ok, so first, the’s the beautiful cabinets I found for the play room. I found them for $5, for BOTH! The picture doesn’t really do them justice, they are so nice! They hold all of our toys so much better then the shelf we were using before. That shelf is now kept on top of the cabinets and holds our books. Speaking of which, our collection was suddenly greatly expanded thanks to a gift from the parents of a high-school friend of mine. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Young! We love our new books!100_2474

My other great finds: A solid wood toddler bed: $5. 100_2476Replacing the hardware: $5.  Those are $80+ when you buy them new! Now the kids each have their own beds!

100_2477A top-loading VCR: $2.50, and it WORKS just fine! Not even any scratches on the front, like someone just put it by their TV and never used it. Very heavy, not made out of plastic like the stuff you buy nowadays. (Yes, that’s Return of the Jedi sitting on top of it. /duck. What can I say? It’s like Nerd Porn.) Please ignore my half-dismantled VHD/DVD player on top. It’s broken and I tried (unsucessfully) to fix it before I bought this one.

100_2478I also found this nifty chair for $1, and a little baby bed for the kids’ dolls for fifty cents! We also went to a church garage sale where a grocery-bag of clothes was $1, and there I hit the motherlode of wool sweaters. I’ve since made two diaper covers and one pair of longies from them, and still have lots left over. I guess I’ll probably get six pair of longies and maybe ten short covers before I run out of wool. My more recent obsession with wool and other fiber arts is juicy, fiber-loving fodder for another post entirely. I’ll probably write that one when I get the 4 oz alpaca and 1 oz bamboo that I’ve ordered in the mail.

Saturday: Garage sales today

Filed under: General — Sunsong Braun @ 2:18 pm

After not being able to make to the sales the past month-ish, I finally got to go today, although it wasn’t as great as the last time I went. The last time I went, about a month ago, was the best week ever!

So let’s start with this week. I got three books for the kids (including a vintage ET story book), two hats for the costume chest, two Harry Potter books, two exersize DVDs (because one day I might consider getting my ass back in shape, maybe…), a tiny roasting pan, a pretty serving bowl,  a toy high-chair, a wool sweater(!), a big strand of giand wooden beads, a wood “paper doll” puzzle, and some super cute dresses for Lillith. The kids aren’t in the pictures because they were so busy running from item to item that they didn’t have time to pose or model anything.

I’ll do a separate post for the things I found at previous garage sales, along with more pictures of the kids if I can get them still or in some sort of interesting action.

Thursday: the past on my mind March 26, 2009

The night before my mother died, the nurse in the room next to hers was singing. It was November 13, a bit early for Christmas songs, but the sang them anyway.

I can’t stop thinking about this today. I was pregnant, vainly pursuing sleep in the chair in the corner of her room. Occasionally I’d look up and my mother would be awake, despite the high doses of sedatives and painkillers she had been given to help her sleep through what was coming the next morning. And then out of the blue, a woman was singing “Silent Night”. My mother loved Christmas songs and woke when she heard it. She stayed awake the whole time the woman sang. I sat in the corner, watching her. There was a battle in my head. I wanted to go hold her hand, to talk to her for one of the last times. I also knew how badly we all wanted her to sleep and stay asleep through… the inevitable, and I didn’t want to keep her awake. So instead I sat in the corner of the room, in my chair, tired and crying. My mother and I shared our last significant moments alone together in that room that night, listening to this womans’ beautiful voice as she sang to her patient.

I want to thank that nurse. I don’t know who she was and I wish I had gone to her to thank her personally, but I didn’t want to leave my mother. The best I can do now is to hope she sees this. Thank you for singing. Thank you for singing, in the darkest of dark nights in my life. Thank you for bringing a smile to my mothers’ face one last time. You will never know how grateful I am to you for that.

100_1653The pink shirred sundress is finished, and here is Lilli, less-than-pleased about modeling it for the benefit of the camera.

Also is included a picture of Evans’ completed dino t-shirt, and a similar dino design on a bag I made for my neighbors’ boy. I don’t usually post photos of things I make for other people, but I had to do this one. It’s just so darn cute!
